Genshin Impact Wriothesley: The Warden Under the Deep Ocean
Wriothesley, "Lord Incognito of the murky depths, Duke of Fortress of Meropide". Today, we examine this "Warden".
1. The Life of Wriothesley
Wriothesley is a foundling who was adopted by a foster family. The parents of the foster family were a couple who adopted many children and when the children were a little older they were passed on to other families for adoption.
But as he grew older, Wriothesley realized the truth. That was that the couple was nothing more than a pair of human traffickers. They sold the children who had trade value, and the ones they couldn't sell were "disposed of".
It is written here in a very subtle way, but I personally think that this "disposed of" may include killing, and may squeeze out the last of these children's everything for value, let's think about the Doctor, think about the evils of those who are in Fleuve Cendre of Fontaine ...... and the children who are sold. They may be in a new family to live a life of food and clothing, or fall into a new nightmare. The children who have been sold may be living in new homes with no food or clothing, or they may be falling into a new nightmare, after all, the traffickers don't vet the adopters as much as the regular orphanages do.
2. Wriothesley's Path to Revenge
As Wriothesley grew older, he realized the truth. He escaped the demon's clutches before he was "disposed of". But anger and a sense of justice drove him, and he set a goal to go back and destroy that demonic lair.
But he was only a teenager at the time, with no shelter, no skill, and not even any ability to eat a full meal. Homeless, he suffered a lot, and he slowly took odd jobs, learned skills, and little by little perfected all the skills he might need for revenge.
After an indeterminate amount of time, he was finally ready. He made a nail gun like device fixed to his wrist that shot steel nails at high speeds, but had a limited ammo load.
One day he sneaks back into the "Foster Family" and in the dead of night takes his revenge. Though well prepared, the murder of two adults by a teenager turned into a life-and-death struggle. He suffered near-death serious injuries, and his small device was completely scrapped in that tussle.
By the time he woke up, he had become a juvenile delinquent.
3. The "Birthday" of Wriothesley
As he awoke from his injuries, he was asked for his name. At this point he thought of an obituary he had read, a long and complicated name that he didn't really like. Yet he still gave himself this name, "Wriothesley", on the day of his awakening, he gave himself a new name.
After gradually recovering from his injuries, he was able to attend the trial. The trial went very well and he confessed to his crime. At the end of the trial, the reviewer asked him about his birthday and he said "...Today".
And so November 23rd, the day he entered Fortress of Meropide, became the day he gave himself a new life. And on that day, he also gained the gaze of Archon at the same time, as he was given an Cryo Vision.
4. Speculation on the age of Wriothesley
There are a lot of speculative time points given in the storyline regarding Wriothesley's age.
Since Wriothesley was able to do odd jobs by the time he was living on the streets, let's tentatively go with 10-12 years old. And by the time he was ready for revenge, he had already learned some skills, which means that he was 12-14 years old at the time of his revenge, the year he got the Cryo Vision.
When he was knighted "Duke", he was almost double the age he was when he got the Cryo Vision, which was probably between 23-27 years old.
Navia's father, Callas, mentions him in the character profile. Mr. Callas has been dead for three years, and would have been around 26-30 years old when the Travelers met Wriothesley.
5. Wriothesley's Weapon
Wriothesley's weapon is a pair of mechanical gauntlets, and he has a standby action of ripping stickers off of them.
There are three stickers in total, one of which features a picture of an oddly shaped shark, and has been made into a Wriothesley plush by miHoYo official, travelers who like this doll can head over to website to purchase it! The stickers were actually put on by Sigewinne and her Melusine friends, and each time one was removed, another one would appear the next time.
There's actually a gameplay egg there in the form of these little stickers that randomly appear on the gloves when Wriothesley use his Elemental Burst.
6. Constellation of Wriothesley
Wriothesley's constellation is Cerberus, the prototype of the Greek mythological watchdog Cerberus, which is the three-headed dog of hell, guarding the entrance to the underworld. Combined with the symbol of Fortress of Meropide is also the style of the three-headed dog, this corresponds to the identity of the "Warden" of Wriothesley; secondly, it is an allusion to Fortress of Meropide under the suppression of the Primordial Sea may be related to the entrance to the "Underworld". It should be noted that the intention of the "underworld" appears many times in Genshin, such as the Nibelung is related to the underworld in Norse mythology, but we do not know what the underworld refers to in Genshin Impact.
And like a counterpart to the Cerberus constellation, Wriothesley's appearance has a lot of wolf or dog features. For example, the wolf ear-like hairstyle, the standing gray-black fur on his coat, and the tail-like chain behind him. In addition the wolf's head on the two crests on the left hand and right chest, one to the left and one to the right, together with Wriothesley himself, happened to have the intention of the three-headed dog of hell as well.
That's all there is to know about the character of Wriothesley, and I hope this information helps you get to know this charismatic character a little better!
