Genshin Impact Sandrone: "The Final Gift" Analysis
This animated short is essentially a dramatization of the contents left behind in Sandrone's journal. The animation itself is already delicate enough, but when paired with the diary entries—where she tries to act tough despite having so many thoughts swirling in her mind—it brings an even deeper emotional impact.
The short opens with Sandrone dreaming of Alain's funeral back then. In her diary, the tone of her writing is calm, but in reality, for her at that time, it was the darkest day she had experienced since her creation. She had lost Alain forever—the father, teacher, and friend who loved her. That day, Sandrone actually stood frozen for a long time in front of Alain's grave, feeling profoundly lonely.

"If someone was crying in the sky," the raindrops falling from the sky are the tears of the Water Dragon; Neuvillette too mourns endlessly over Alain's passing. "It feels as if the only companion I have left in this world is the moon." Little did Sandrone know that this remark of hers would one day take on a double meaning.
Sandrone wakes from her nightmare, roused by a familiar, gentle song coming from outside her door. Though she always sounds impatient with that naive Columbina, the care in her words never fails to warm Sandrone's heart—she just refuses to admit it. After going through those bleak and difficult times, Sandrone gained a new friendship, bringing precious warmth and color into her life.

Accompanied by a disingenuous "I'm perfectly fine," Sandrone's thoughts drifted back to the past, when Alain's health was deteriorating rapidly, and time was running out for the old man. In her diary, Sandrone wrote that she felt she didn't need to understand complex human emotions like "sadness," "anger," or "guilt." Yet, the pained and concerned expression on her face when facing Alain proved she was lying. She was merely hating her own helplessness—wondering if she had never understood emotions in the first place, would she feel less pain? The "Narzissenkreuz Requiem" playing during this segment evokes deep emotion. Behind its beautiful melody lies a long and sorrowful story—one engraved with childhood dreams, immense love, and pure longing; a tale of saving the world and self-redemption.

Alain showed Sandrone his final creation—Pulonia. This machine was, in essence, a formula—a device designed to calculate the fate of the world. Although Alain and his close friend Rene ultimately parted ways and grew estranged, the dream they had sworn since childhood—to save the world—never diverged. This is why, when the Narzissenkreuz Ordo was raided, Alain, stepping into the Tower of Ipsissimus, did not conduct a thorough search but silently closed the door and left.
However, unlike his friend who immersed himself in the mystical philosophy transcending human intellect, Alain preferred to trust in mathematical science—something fully comprehensible and masterable by humanity. To this end, he spent the latter half of his life establishing the Fontaine Research Institute of Kinetic Energy Engineering Region, bringing tremendous technological change and progress to Fontaine society through Clockwork Mekas and energy research.

Pulonia was the final hope of this legendary old man in his twilight years. Unfortunately, until the very end of his life, Alain never saw the moment when the calculation of the world's fate yielded a definitive result. If Alain had known that his research, combined with Rene's, would one day become the key to a successful salvation effort, he would surely have felt great relief.

For Sandrone, Pulonia is more than just a machine. It is Alain's secret and his wish, a keepsake left to her by her dearest one—a treasure she must protect. Holding Pulonia's hand brings Sandrone a sense of nostalgic comfort. This habit has never changed, even after she became a Fatui Harbinger and weathered the passage of time.

The animation features several seamless transitions between the present and flashback scenes. The moment when Sandrone takes Pulonia's hand is a brilliant transition device. It smoothly shifts the narrative back to the "present" Fatui meeting scene while expressing a continuous emotional bond. In particular, the shift between warm and cool tones in the flashback versus the present scenes highlights the significance of this emotion in maintaining Sandrone's sense of inner security and belonging.

The Harbingers' meeting is also quite interesting. Pierro convenes all the Harbingers to announce the Tsaritsa's plan to seize the Gnoses. During the meeting, Childe yawns and tears up from drowsiness; Columbina dozes off; Dottore wears his mask while his mind wanders elsewhere; Sandrone spaces out; Arlecchino closes her eyes, feigning sleep; and Pantalone also sits with his eyes shut, lost in thought. Only Signora listens attentively. This meeting likely takes place early in the Mondstadt main storyline, just before Signora is dispatched to Mondstadt and Inazuma, Arlecchino prepares to depart for Fontaine, Pantalone coordinates economic support, and Sandrone is responsible for the technical aspects.

Columbina sensed Sandrone's unusual mood. Worried for her, the friends came to visit together after the meeting. This pajama tea party among the Harbingers is arguably the warmest and most heartwarming part of the entire animation. Their care dispelled the melancholy in Sandrone's heart, making her realize that even in this snowy foreign land, she was never alone.

Such a vivid scene makes me eagerly anticipate the official release of "Sandrone: The Final "Gift" merchandise. Hopefully, this time it won't just be badges but also a series of acrylic stands, pajama apparel, or practical items like cups.

The deliberate shot of the discarded Harbinger cloaks symbolizes that their bond goes beyond mere collegiality—it is genuine friendship.

The Prima Soprano of the Korolevskiy Troupe mentioned here by Signora Vodyanitsa had already appeared in Linnea's character card commentary and voice lines. She is a Fae and, according to lore, specifically belongs to the Water Imp clan (the Daklo's clan) under the beast-type category. Vodyanitsa is suspected to be one of the upcoming playable Snezhnayan characters and quite possibly a debut character for the Snezhnaya region.

The "pillow fight among the ladies," which previously only existed in text, was actually depicted in the animation, satisfying our curiosity and revealing a side of the Harbingers that contrasts with their usual image. The gentle Signora, the tsundere Sandrone, the innocent and mischievous Columbina, and the elegant Arlecchino—each character is vividly brought to life, showcasing the vibrant colors hidden beneath their cold Harbinger personas.

Yet, happy times pass all too quickly. Sandrone never imagined that this tea party would be her farewell to her friend. Not long after, news of Signora's death reached Snezhnaya. Sandrone's diary entry for that day simply read, "Rosalyne is dead." But those few words spoke volumes of her disbelief and grief, more than any lengthy passage could. It's easy to imagine the bitter stroke with which Sandrone wrote that line.

Here, Rosalyne flew into the flame and turned to ash.

The line spoken by Sandrone at Signora's funeral in "A Winter Night's Lazzo"—"Absurd and ridiculous"—has now had its underlying reason revealed in this animated short. At that time, Sandrone could not understand, or rather resisted understanding, the idea of "sacrificing one's life for a wish, even for someone else's wish." The cold remarks from some of her colleagues after Signora's death only deepened her emptiness and pain. She no longer wanted to taste the bitterness of loss again.

On the night of the Prayer to the Moon, Sandrone once said she couldn't comprehend Alain and Rene's choice to sacrifice themselves for the sake of the world, insisting she would never do such a thing.
But not long after, she went back on her word. In the battle to rescue Columbina, defeat Dottore, and save the world, she gave her own life. In the haze of approaching death, Sandrone once again recalled that conversation by the fireplace with Alain years ago, when he asked her, "What is your own wish?" At that moment, she finally found her answer—she wanted to protect her friends, protect those who loved her, and protect everything she held dear. This wasn't for anyone else; it was following her own true heart.

Alain once told Sandrone that someday she would find her own wish, and when that day came, he would bestow upon her his "final gift." The animation ends abruptly with Sandrone saying she has "already received the inheritance," without revealing what Alain's final gift truly was. Personally, I believe the inheritance is certainly not the Stellar Linchpin. Considering Alain's enduring hope that Sandrone could live her life freely on her own terms, this gift is likely related to the "heart." It may be the key to Sandrone's resurrection and second life, or perhaps a presentation of a classic fairy tale theme—how a puppet gradually becomes a real human being.

Now, let us await the arrival of the new version's story. In Sandrone's tale of finding her own "way home," may it draw a complete and touching conclusion to the Narzissenkreuz story and this year-long Song of the Welkin Moon adventure.
