Genshin Impact Snegurochka Analysis: Hesperides of Love and Resentment

Hello everyone, fellow Travelers, welcome to this edition's lore analysis. During our exploration of Snezhnaya in Version 7.0, while searching for the power fragments of the auxiliary intelligence "Eye of Graeae," we inadvertently picked up an invitation issued by the current Grand Duchess of the Snegurochka, allowing us to attend and witness the wedding of Grand Duchess Pavlina.

In the lore, the race of spirit beings known as "Snegovik" (with females called "Snegurochka") is one of the Snowland Fae created by the extinct angelic civilization "Hyperborea." They are masters of Prime Ice technology, using ice elements to create tools, and played an indispensable role in the construction and development of the Snezhnayan civilization. However, these "Snegovik" also have their own "flaw."

As a race "born lacking love," they must seek out the "true love" of humans. Only through union with true love can a "Snegurochka" become truly complete. Otherwise, if betrayed by that "true love," the "Snegurochka" will shatter and fade away. Pavlina's former rival for the throne, Rashana, died precisely because the "true love" she had chosen abandoned her.

Although the race's setting is very romantic, it is difficult to find similar prototype concepts, whether in the Slavic myth of the "Snow Maiden" or the Japanese folklore yokai "Yuki-onna."  To understand the deeper meaning behind this design, we need to look at the world quest name and the residence of the Grand Duchess of the Snegurochka—that place hidden deep within the snow and wind: "Hesperides."

The term "Hesperides" originates from goddesses in Greek mythology. They are the three daughters of Nyx, the Night Mother, who together with the hundred-headed dragon Ladon guarded the golden apple tree—a marriage gift from Gaia, the Earth Goddess, to Hera, the Queen of the Gods, and Zeus, the King of the Gods.

According to the record in Bibliotheca II, 5, 11, the names of the three sisters are "Aegle" (Radiance), "Erytheia" (Red Glow), and "Hesperarethousa" (Dusk), seemingly representing the changing hues of sunset.

However, some legends say they were four sisters, changing Hesperarethousa to Hespereia (Dusk) and adding Arethusa. Other traditions hold that the Hesperides were seven beautiful nymphs living on Mount Atlas at the far western edge of the world. The three-sister version is merely the most mainstream account.

By this point, you might be curious: since they are Snowland Fae, why would they choose to name the duchess's palace after the nymphs who guarded the golden apple orchard in Greek mythology? And what does the "defect" of the Snegurochka seeking true love have to do with this?

The key to the answer lies in the goddess mentioned—Hera, the Queen of the Gods, the mistress of the golden apple tree, the wife of the sacred marriage, and the goddess of marriage. As the famously "jealous wife," Hera's relationship with Zeus is not exactly unknown to everyone—it is, in fact, widely renowned. This beautiful and dignified goddess is not only one of Zeus's wives but also his sister. Although her husband and younger brother was born amorous, with countless lovers and illegitimate children, Hera always harbored a steadfast and unwavering deep love for Zeus, directing her hatred and anger only toward the women whom the King of the Gods pursued, whether willingly or unwillingly.

In fact, compared to Venus, the traditional goddess representing "love," Hera, who remained faithful to her husband and never betrayed his choices, is more worthy of the word "true love."

In Homer's Iliad, it is recorded that the first union of Hera and Zeus took place precisely in the land of the Hesperides sisters. This land witnessed the Queen of the Gods' most cherished "true love" and was also entrusted with the duty of guarding the golden apple tree, which blessed "true love" and "marriage."

Looking back at the title of the world quest, those who harbor both love and resentment are not only the Snegurochka endlessly pursuing "true love" amidst the snow and wind, but also a tribute to that goddess who was loyal to love, steadfast in true love, yet wounded and resentful from love. This contradictory quality—where sweet happiness and bitter brokenness coexist—is also the answer sought by all beneath the ice and snow.

But what kind of outcome will this answer bring to the humans, spirits, and even gods of this nation?
