Xbalanque Genshin: The Legend of the First Pyro Archon

by WongLucien 17 Apr 2025

"Unforeseen by any prophet, absent from the Sage of the Stolen Flame's grand design, rose the sun-forged hero. As the primordial god-king, Xbalanque inscribed the sacred laws of the Nation of War. When the old epoch waned, he forged a covenant with the First Sage-the architect of beginnings-for the coming age."

Today, let's delve into the etymology of the "Original Pyro Archon," Xbalanque.

When the primal flame was sown across Natlan's soil, human civilization wielding Phlogiston thrived in this scorching realm. Guided by tribal Wayob, fire-empowered heroes rode tamed beasts from mountain villages to storm stone fortresses, vowing to spread Wayob's blessings to forbidden lands. As war horns blared endlessly, ancient dragons vanished from plains they once roamed, palaces on lava cliffs dimmed, and rivers took on humanity's hues.

The ancient sovereigns watched in dread as tides of change surged. The Flame Dragon King-once sharing light and wisdom-became draconic kin's last hope, though none would admit his radiance now resembled a walking corpse. All signs pointed to the Dragon Era's final countdown.

Yet history spirals. Victorious humans turned blades from dragons to their own kin. Tribal warlords forgot draconic crusades, fixated on dominance; warriors unleashed endless strife with beasts as weapons; even the Night-Domain Wayob quarreled over which clan's hero should deliver divine judgment.

The Dragon Sage of Stolen Flame watched silently, believing only apex conquerors could unite Black Stone tribes, slay the decaying Dragon King in volcanoes, and reign over twin realms. To him, blade-born strife required sharper steel; ambition-fed delusions demanded grander ambitions-this was his "Evolution" through survival of the fittest.

Yet history proved him wrong again. The Sage who thought he mastered "Evolution" never imagined power could birth answers beyond bloodshed. From Obsidian soil rose an unplanned king-blinding as dawn, gentle as first light.

Who is Xbalanque?

Xbalanque, Natlan's first Pyro Archon, is revered as "One Entombed With the Primal Fire." Throughout Natlan's history, his exceptional leadership and wisdom united humans and dragons to repel the Abyss. He fortified the foundations of the Night Kingdom and established enduring traditions—the "Ode of Resurrection" and the "Pilgrimage"—laying the cornerstone for Natlan's ascendant civilization and ushering in its glorious Pyro Archon Era.

The Path to Pyro Archon of Xbalanque

The foreign warrior Xbalanque wove golden blooms into a laurel, shouldered an obsidian greatsword, and journeyed between tribes. Where he walked, rifts of strife healed, and unity blossomed. Beneath the sun's radiance, tribal warlords sealed truces; the Night-Domain Wayob set aside disputes to crown him. People hailed the dawn of a new era-when its light bathes the land, even shadowed beasts shall stand exposed.

Under Xbalanque's command, humanity's advance proved unstoppable-yet this hero-king sought not to drown the world in war but to forge a new future capable of overcoming darkness. Warriors of every lineage rallied to him, launching the decisive assault on the draconic dynasty's volcanic sanctum. And there, the long-slumbering Dragon King awoke as fate decreed, enthroned and awaiting the arrival of humanity's chosen.

Xbalanque's advance was unstoppable

None know the details of Xbalanque's battle with Xokotl, but all remember skies torn asunder. Twin suns clashed-buildings crumbled in shockwaves, pale stones hurled skyward then crushed to dust. The Flame Dragon King spewed heaven-scarlet flames; the solar hero ascended mid-combat. As the draconic kin wailed, they watched the blade-pierced dragon and fallen hero plummet, then saw the flame-wreathed man rise anew from the dead dragon's heart-the hero's rebirth.

Xbalanque was reborn as a deity

After eons, Natlan's humans claimed their divine throne. Xbalanque, having slain the Flame Dragon King, obtained the Primordial Fire (Authority of the Ancient Pyro Dragon) and ascended as Pyro Archon. The draconic civilization's millennia of knowledge and treasures were now his to command. The first god-king then borrowed celestial power to ignite sacred flames, establishing Natlan's new order.

Witnessing this triumph, the hidden Sage emerged-though his grand design lay in ruins, he knew history's tide now flowed beyond his grasp.

At the edge of the Primordial Cataclysm, the Sage who ignited the new era's flame forged a covenant with the first god-king: he would relinquish control over human and dragon futures, his treason against dragonkind driven by hope for their equal coexistence. Yet he warned-eternal vigilance must guard against lurking foes; foreign defilement still festered in Night-Domain depths, poised to unleash a final assault. Civilization must unite all knowledge and power before that day.

Edge of the Primordial Cataclysm

The Sage prophesied an even more distant future: "The Ancient Ones shall return. Let the Children of Man swear this oath-when those who raised the Celestial Refuge to shelter mortals or bestowed the Flame of Enlightenment send their scions back through primordial fire, none shall impede their passage!"

Thus the dimming old era sank below the horizon. Under Xbalanque's unification, Natlan entered its radiant new age-later hailed as the "Grand Union of Natlan." As years passed, the first god-king faced mortality: offering his heart with a golden dagger, he returned to sacred flames. The hero departed the land he cherished, posthumously honored as "Entombed with the Primordial Flame."

People awaited a new Solar Sovereign to reign, yet none foresaw the violent shattering of human-dragon coexistence. The nation plunged into a twilight nightmare dominated by the Sacred Lord...

Etymology of the "First Pyro Archon" Xbalanque

Xbalanque's mythological origin traces to the Maya hero "Xbalanque," one of the Twin Heroes alongside Hunahpu. Revered as mythological ancestors of Maya ruling lineages, their saga is central to the Kʼicheʼ people's (a Guatemalan Highland Maya group) sacred text, Popol Vuh.

Mayan Hero Twins Xbalanque and Hunahpu

The twin heroes Xbalanque and Hunahpu were born with a vengeful destiny-to confront Xibalba's rulers (the Maya underworld) who murdered their father. But first, they mastered blowgun hunting and the ritual ballgame (tlachtli), where the ball symbolized the sun, and defeated captains faced sacrificial decapitation, their skulls becoming new ball cores.

Undeterred, the twins recruited elderly shamans disguised as dentists. They replaced Vucub-Caquix's remaining gem-teeth with white corn. Humiliated, the fallen deity met his demise in despair.

After years of trials, the twins stormed Xibalba, subjugating the Death Lords to avenge their father. Their triumph left the underworld in decline, its rulers eternally lurking in shadows. Ascending to the heavens, Hunahpu became the sun, while Xbalanque transformed into the eternal moon, guiding hunters through the night.

Etymologically, "Xbalanque" derives from Classical Mayan as "Jaguar Sun" (X-balam-que) or "Hidden Sun" (X-balan-que), explaining why in-game texts designate him as the "Veiled Solar Sovereign."
