Genshin Impact Sandrone: Marionette Artwork Analysis

I believe no one expected the new character artwork to be released on a Monday this time! While I'm sure many Travelers had already guessed that the grand finale character of the "Moonlit Sonata" arc would be the Marionette, seeing the official artwork is still incredibly exciting—truly a feast for the eyes and exceptionally stunning. Now, let's delve into the story behind Sandrone's artwork together!

The official artwork introduction for Marionette doesn't provide new information, but the character card itself features some notable new elements.

First, following the "Vision" and "Moon Wheel," a new elemental power driver called the "Stellar Linchpin" has appeared. This is likely related to the new elemental reaction system to be implemented in the Snezhnaya region, similar to Nod-Krai's "Lunar Reaction." Based on the effects of the new Artifact set and subsequent character buffs, it can be inferred that Marionette utilizes a completely new type of Superconduct reaction (Cryo + Electro).

Stellar Linchpin

Earlier, the Snezhnaya preview short "Frozen Tundra Shrouded in Wind and Snow" showed the Traveler triggering a new type of Cryo-Electro reaction. The distinctive starry symbol that appeared matches the one seen here for the "Stellar Linchpin," seemingly creating a special zone on the battlefield.

While the origin of the "Moon Wheel" is tied to the Moon God, the new "Stellar Linchpin" tool is likely connected to the Third Descender. This Descender, whom the Heavenly Principles killed and fashioned their remains into the "Gnosis," holds a unique place in Snezhnayan history, linked to both generations of the Cryo Archon.

The lore text for the new Artifact set, "Disenchantment in Deep Shadow," mentions that Snezhnayan scholars, entrusted by the Belyi Tsar, continued the dream originating from the "Golden City" Hyperborea. This grand ambition has been passed down through the Snow Nation to this day. "To seek the stairway leading to the vacant seat in the court of the stars" and "a passage to a place where worry and sorrow would no longer trouble them ever again" are precisely the goals they pursue.

It's worth mentioning that a scholar named "Aksinya," recorded as "a silver-haired infant" who played a crucial role in the plan, was an ancient Hyperborean survivor. She was found by the Belyi Tsar in a shelter built by the Golden City to withstand the Heavenly Principles' assault during his exploration of Hyperborea's ruins. This infant, who traversed time, was taken in and raised personally by the Belyi Tsar, essentially making her the Cryo Archon's adoptive sister (although, being human, she likely passed away long ago).

"Countless times thereafter, he walked the ruins in the shadows, pondering whether he should shoulder such a burden...

For in this day and age, none remained who would demand the responsibilities and burdens he had been made to bear."

"That is, until one day, he passed by a broken structure filled with life-sustaining devices from ages past.

The content above corresponds with the sections about the Third Descender in the "Hymns of the Far North" and the backstory of the Wind Glider "Wings of the Silent Moon." Both texts, though with different tones and emotional nuances, describe how the King of the Snow Nation once received assistance from "a traveler from beyond the palace walls" to open a certain "door" or "passage."

The term "Vacant Seat in the Court of the Stars" itself pairs well with the "Stellar Linchpin." Therefore, it's speculated that this system is a "power from beyond this world" brought by the Third Descender. The specifics will have to wait for future story reveals (and Sandrone's character profile lore will likely mention part of it).

Next is the background of the character card. Unlike the two already playable Harbingers (Childe and The Knave), although Marionette's character title is still "7th of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers," the background is no longer that of a Harbinger. Instead, it features a completely new, local Snezhnayan faction.
