Neuvillette's lore analysis

by Genshin Fans 05 Aug 2024

This issue introduces you to Neuvillette's lore analysis. Let's explore the details of Neuvillette~!

First, his name, Neuvillette, is likely derived from the French La Villette. Villette translates to "small village," while the word Neuvillette can be understood as "new village," which most likely refers to Fontaine as it is present today.

Also Villette can be used as a person's name, according to the information found, there may be two persons in history who are related to the archetype of Villette:One who matches Villette's description is Arthur Villettes, a British diplomat.

The second character, Pierre Villette, was a French composer who suffered from severe health issues that required him to spend extended periods in cozy climes. "Villette could not leave Fontaine so easily" may have something to do with this. The majority of the composer's compositions include Christian themes, such as Hymne à la Vierge, which is similar to the music from Navillatte's PV. The remainder of Navillatte's setting is also said to have Christian themes, but we'll be introduced to those later.

Pierre-Villette

In terms of appearance, Neuvillette's costume reminds us of the baroque Habit à la française, which consists of breeches, an undershirt, and a jacket. The jacket, known as "Justacorps," was the primary garment worn by the aristocratic men of the era and was made of opulent materials like silk and wool.

Individuals were eager to add gold thread decorations, which gave the entire outfit an elegant and complicated appearance. Even now, several stylish and contemporary suits still use these designs.

Furthermore, Villette's lapel design includes a scale motif, which is consistent with his position as the Supreme Judge.

This kind of clothing was frequently worn by European gentlemen with canes.

Originally, walking sticks were used as support and assistance when walking. Some people believe Louis XIV is the one who first introduced it as an item of fashion.

Louis-XIV

Louis XIV was a big fan of wearing high heels, and he frequently used a cane to help with walking and standing, which led people to associate canes with aristocratic male clothing.

Moreover, it's interesting to note that Neuvillette, Hydro Dragon Sovereign, has many characteristics of marine life, such the tail fin behind his partner on his bow that resembles a whale's tail:

There's also the well-known Leisurely Otter shape:

It's worth mentioning the Leisurely Otter plush toy here. It's incredibly cute and soft, an official merch that faithfully captures the details from the game.

At the same time, another kind of design element seems to be prevalent in Neuvillette; this is the style shown below, which is narrow on one side and wide on the other, and closely resembles the shape of the entire body as well as the clothing and jewelry:

There are two interpretations that could be used here:

First, it appears to be a stream of water emerging from a fountain; Fontaine means "fountain" in its original French.

Similar fountain patterns may be seen on a few of the structures, fitting for this Fontaine Supreme Judge.

Second, I speculate that the design of this image could possibly connect to the Ikakalaka, an African ceremonial sword that has been included in a number of modern performances and is a common element in popular culture.

For instance, Megatron, the Decepticon leader in the Transformers television series, wields a sword of this kind. This ceremonial sword, which represents the leader's authority and status, fits perfectly for Villette's elevated status.

Why did Fontaine's Neuvillette incorporate African cultural design elements?

This could be related to Proto-God's Natlan, the Land of Fire.

For example, a character named "Hibarak" appears in the official Navellet stand-up character description.

Xbalanque is the name of one of the Maya Hero Twins. The Maya Twins, in particular, could be considered as mythical ancestors to the Maya ruling lineages.Furthermore, the concept of "reincarnation" is prominent in Mayan faiths, which believe that the soul departs from the body upon death and enters the afterlife.

Due to the name's origin in Mesoamerican mythology, it is reasonable to presume that the game character Xbalanque is from Natlan.

We are also shown the tip of the Natlan in the back story of the Weapon "Talking Stick" :

story2

Dragons in Natlan, called Saurians, have undergone long-term development and evolution with a large number of them coexisting with humanity.

It presents Natlan as a place of "human-dragon coexistence," in which humans live with dragons and ride them; all of the dragons' names originate from African mythological creatures.

Let's look at these two key words related to Natha - 'reincarnation' and 'human-dragon coexistence.'

Right now, Neuvillette is in this situation.

Thus, it is possible to speculate that Navellet was involved in the activities in Natha earlier than his arrival in Fontaine, and perhaps that he was reborn as a human.

Not only does this single design indicate that Villette was involved with Natha, but the gemstone on his breast serves as more compelling proof, since it is evident that it has a range of colors, including red, blue, and green.

Neuvillette-accessories

This gemstone, named opal, is referred described as the "palette" of gemstones because of its unique ability to change color. On one opal stone, we can observe many hues harmoniously blending together.

Opal

Opal comes from three primary places: Africa, America, and Australia. As previously noted, the Americas and Africa are the prototypes of the Natlan; thus, it is probable that the gemstone Neuvillette is wearing on his breast originates from the Natlan, confirming the preceding hypothesis.

Furthermore, there might be a connection between Vilette's rebirth and the Dragon's altered perspective on why he assumed a human form. Do you remember the book "Before Sun and Moon" in Enkanomiya?

story3

It is clear that the "Dragon ," the original inhabitants of Teyvat, and Phanes had a tense relationship when Phanes descended to Teyvat.

Phanes produced all of the animals, plants, fish, birds, trees, and humans on the Teyvat continent.

Thus, the Water Dragon King's transformation into a human being is akin to his being a creation of his adversary. I think everyone is well aware of the Constellation. What made the Water Dragon King, then, wrongly reincarnate as a "human being" and submit to the "Constellation"?

Thus, two possibilities may be considered: either Phanes defeated the Water Dragon King and he joined its camp passively, or Phanes convinced him to join its camp actively.

And that Villette artwork's title, "Let the mighty be humbled," may have already given us the official response.

The line, "It looks down on all that are haughty; it is king over all that are proud." is found in the book of Job, Chapter 41, Verse 34. It shows the story of the enormous sea monster Leviathan.

Leviathan

Given that the biblical Leviathan is a monster that God created, the Neuvillette's yoke, referred to as the Throne of Life, signifies his constant subordination to Phanes.

What then does the Book of Job, the source of the Throne of Destiny and the name of Neuvillette's position, have to say about this?

Put simply, it's about a guy named Job who asked, "Why am I, who is good and just, suffering so much?" because he felt that God was unjust because of his suffering. After God makes it clear to Job that his mission is to uphold the universe's order, Job acknowledges his ignorance of how the cosmos functions, much less how it can be maintained, and he turns to God in repentance and faith.

Does this imply that the dragons, who were the first inhabitants of Teyvat, were unaware of the laws of the universe in which Teyvat is located or the reason why Phanes existed in the first place if we replace God in the story with Phanes and make Job the Water Dragon King? They went to war with Phanes for no other reason than their own. For instance, they want to save their country or maintain the dragons' status as the original Teyvat rulers.

And creatures like the human Water Dragon King arose as some of these dragons heard Phanes's comments, felt proper, and realized they could not mess with it. As a result, they bowed to Phanes.

Then, in the perspective of "Nibelung" and "Apep," the dragon monarchs who are adamant about revolting against the sky, Neuvillette, who is now making friends with humanity, is the same as a dragon rebel.
