Why Did Durin and Scaramouche Become Good Friends?
Puppet and Dragon - one was once abandoned by the world, harboring deep resentment, the other was created as a Calamity, yet possessed pure innocence. In the Version 6.2 Durin Story Quest, Scaramouche will appear as the final key character and form a genuine friendship with Durin. This dramatic encounter stems from the shared longing in the depths of their souls for "existence" and "redemption".
1. Identity Resonance: Shared Tragic Origin of Being Creations
The fates of Scaramouche and Durin begin with a tragedy of creation. Scaramouche is a puppet crafted by the Raiden Shogun from a branch of Irminsul, deemed an "unworthy vessel" due to the experiment's failure, abandoned, wandering the mortal world, enduring betrayal, deceived by the Doctor, and committing irreparable mistakes.

The dragon Durin is a creation of the alchemist "Gold" Rhinedottir, belonging to the "Festering Desire" layer. Created in the Abyss and guided to Mondstadt, it unintentionally caused a great Calamity. Little Durin, born from the pen of a witch, has been cursed since birth, viewed as an anomaly by the residents of Simulanka because of its touch-melting block nature.
Both characters are products of powerful creators, yet were given forms of existence destined for suffering. Scaramouche yearns for a human heart in vain, turning instead to seek a Gnosis; Durin longs to dance and sing with people, yet becomes an avatar of destruction due to the "Darkblood" within.

They both harbor desires contrary to their very nature: Scaramouche yearns to be recognized as "human," and Durin yearns to be accepted as a "friend."
2. Character Complement: Tsundere Puppet and the Innocent Dragon
If a shared fate made them see each other, then their completely opposite personalities are what truly bring this relationship to life.

Scaramouche (Hat Guy) appears sharp on the surface, with harsh words, often pushing people away with excuses like "wanting to be alone," and is accustomed to using pride and aloofness to build psychological defenses. However, Durin, with his unspoiled innocence and persistence, easily sees through this disguise. Durin bluntly states that Hat Guy is "the strangest type of human, a tsundere for short," and keenly observes: "He always complains about how noisy they are, but he's never denied their friendship."

Therefore, Durin chooses to stay. This interaction of "natural innocence overcoming tsundere" is full of dramatic tension. Even from Durin's fairy-tale perspective, Durin transforms into an adorable little dragon, while Scaramouche is imaginatively portrayed as a "kitten" with a tsundere personality, affectionately called "Cat Scaramouche" by players, with a very cute expression. It must be said, miHoYo should consider releasing new Scarameow Plush and Durin dragon plush soon; these two characters are simply too endearing.
Getting back on topic, it is precisely Durin's direct, non-judgmental way of approaching that gradually melts the icy shell around Scaramouche, forcing him to lower his guard and reveal the sense of responsibility and softness hidden within.
3. Mutual Healing and Redemption

Scaramouche's past is filled with mistakes and hurt, whether from his actions as a Fatui Harbinger or his retaliation against the Raiden Gokaden. Although he has accepted this past and started anew as the Wanderer, the path to redemption is long and winding. By helping Durin avoid straying down a similar misguided path, Scaramouche finds reconciliation with his former self.
On the other hand, Durin's very existence is a metaphor about a "second chance." The dragon Durin attained a form of purity in death, and the newly born Durin carries this purity to begin again. This "rebirth" may let Scaramouche see hope-that no matter the past, reshaping oneself is always possible.

Their relationship may become a mirror for each other: Scaramouche sees in Durin his own past confusion and potential; Durin sees in Scaramouche the growing pains and eventual freedom. This mirror relationship transcends ordinary friendship, becoming a symbiotic form of spiritual support.

In the BE(Bad Ending) of Durin's Story Quest, when Durin faces the crisis of reverting to a dragon due to the power of fate correction, Scaramouche falls into extreme self-blame. He believes it is the "curse" of his own past actions-tampering with the Irminsul and disrupting causality-that caused Durin's tragedy. To "save" Durin, he even chooses to actively sever all memories connecting him to Durin. This latent choice, sacrificing himself to protect the other, precisely proves the weight this friendship holds in his heart.
Two lonely souls, seeing each other in their meeting, also moving towards redemption through understanding. Their story is not just about tragedy and resistance, but even more about acceptance, trust, and the courage to begin again.
