Genshin Impact Odette Lore Analysis

by Genshin Fans 03 Jul 2026

This is a character closely associated with the elements of "ballet" and "swans." The name "Odette" (Russian: Одетта) is derived from the protagonist of Tchaikovsky's world-renowned classic ballet Swan Lake(Russian: Лебединое озеро)—the pure and kind-hearted "White Swan" Princess Odette.

Genshin Odette

Note: Swan Lake tells the story of Prince Siegfried, who encounters and falls in love with Princess Odette, tragically cursed to transform into a swan by day. He learns that only a vow of true love can break the evil spell. The prince promises to save her, but the next day, he is deceived by the "Black Swan" Odile, disguised by the demon, believing her to be his beloved swan maiden. Upon hearing this devastating news, Odette is heartbroken.>

The prince later awakens to the truth and pursues his true love all the way to the Swan Lake. In the happy ending version (the St. Petersburg version), the great power of love ultimately triumphs over evil, the princess's curse is lifted, and they live happily ever after. In the tragic version (the Bolshoi Theatre premiere version), knowing the curse can never be broken, the prince and princess choose to leap into the lake together, sacrificing their lives to make their love eternal.

Swan Lake

Swan Lake is an undisputed classic among classics. In particular, the universally hummable melody of the "Dance of the Little Swans" and the dancers' iconic en pointestances and fouettéturns have left the deepest impression of ballet on many people.

In the PV, before Odette's appearance, a scene of a ballet mechanism doll on a swan pedestal is deliberately shown, clearly hinting at the design elements. As for the term "Lelek" mentioned by Vodyanitsa in the dialogue, its exact meaning remains unclear. In Slavic languages, this word carries meanings such as "lament" or "nightjar," which differ considerably from the swan imagery. For now, it can only be assumed to refer to an individual or group holding opposing political stances and goals to Vodyanitsa's faction.

Ballet Swan Lake

It is worth noting that in the ballet Swan Lake, it is traditional for the actress playing the protagonist "White Swan" Odette to also portray the antagonist "Black Swan" Odile. In the game, this mirrors Odette's duality and contrasting nature—on the surface, she is a young, beautiful ballerina in the troupe, but secretly, she is a skilled, silent assassin. This is well expressed in the PV's visuals, such as the light-and-dark split frame when Odette draws her dagger, and the black swan feathers drifting down as she neutralizes her target.

Genshin Impact Odette

Odette's costume is designed with reference to a ballet tutu, and her attire features many swan-themed decorations

Genshin Impact Odette

In addition to the falling black swan feathers, Odette's shadow during her assassination appears to be a dancing ballerina, giving off a sense of both elegance and danger.

Then here comes the interesting part. Beyond being a masterpiece of human art, Swan Lakewas actually imbued with a very special, era-defining connotation during the Soviet era—serving as a euphemism for political crises.

During the Soviet period, whenever the authorities needed to conceal the death of a high-ranking official (such as Brezhnev's passing in 1982) or respond to sudden political upheavals (such as the August 1991 coup), state television would halt regular programming and broadcast this ballet on an endless loop until the situation was under control or the transition was complete. At the time, Soviet citizens knew that if Swan Lakesuddenly appeared on TV, it meant "something had happened."

The main thread of the first half of the entire PV is a political crisis unfolding in Snezhnaya. As Project Stuzha progresses, internal divisions within Snezhnaya begin to emerge, and hearts and minds gradually waver. Some firmly support carrying the plan through to the end, while others start to question whether the nation can still bear the burdens and consequences of continuing it. In the previous preview short, "Laws of the Bitter Frost," conflicts among the Harbingers over the plan during a meeting were already shown. This PV further depicts a parliamentary session where members are stirred into openly voicing opposition, pressuring the decision on whether to proceed with Project Stuzha.

Sandrone

Although Sandrone says this here, she is actually a firm supporter of the Tsaritsa. After all, she once wrote in her diary, "The Tsaritsa's plan must succeed." This is also evident from the fact that she immediately returned to Snezhnaya to report for duty and resumed her work after being resurrected

Council Member

The council member who initiated the dissent is the same person who was previously held at knifepoint by Odette (and targeted by Alyosha's sniper rifle). Based on the PV's content, it appears he was threatened by the "civilian opposition" questioning Project Stuzha—he had to value his own life

Speaking of which, let's also briefly discuss the Tsaritsa's experiences upon her ascension five hundred years ago and the background of the formation of Snezhnaya's current political landscape.

According to the records in "A Brief History of the Pale Starborn," after the death of the Belyi Tsar, although Anastasya Feodorovna was quickly crowned as the Tsaritsa of all Snezhnaya, the nation was still plunged into turmoil and civil strife. Many Fae princes refused to submit to the new Tsaritsa's rule and declined to travel to Snezhnograd for an audience. Meanwhile, humans in Port Belovodye fired the first shots of an uprising, rebelling against the oppressive Fae princes and declaring the overthrow of Fae autocracy in favor of human self-governance.

Unlike the Belyi Tsar, the Tsaritsa did not follow tradition by mobilizing the "Druzhna." Instead, she formed a new army called the "Fatui." Once the Fatui was assembled, the Tsaritsa began to demonstrate her decisive measures, dispatching the new troops to occupy the territories of the Fae princes. Under charges of negligence and complicity in rebellion, she stripped the princes of their titles over these domains, replacing them with non-hereditary officials. If the princes refused to accept, they were directly eliminated. As for the human self-governance army in Port Belovodye that had genuinely revolted, the Tsaritsa instead sent envoys to appease them, ultimately resolving the issue peacefully without bloodshed.

Druzhna

The Tsaritsa constructed a new fortress near the capital Snezhnograd, named "Glupov," meaning "City of Fools." The name is derived from the satirical novel The History of a Town(Russian: История одного города) by the prominent Russian writer Saltykov-Shchedrin, a masterpiece of 19th-century Russian satire that metaphorically critiques bureaucratic malpractice through the fictional City of Fatui.

Under these circumstances, the Fae princes who recognized the shifting tides swiftly declared absolute loyalty to the Tsaritsa, endorsed all her arrangements, and dutifully surrendered their power. As for the less perceptive stubborn faction, many of them had already "passed away" before they could give their formal reply to the Tsaritsa—either liquidated in secret by the Tsaritsa's agents or killed by revolutionary forces supported by the central government that rose up locally.

Thus, Tsaritsa fully seized control of the northern tundra and began legislating to push forward the political restructuring of Snezhnaya. First, she issued a decree establishing the Snezhnograd Veche (Russian: Cнежноградское вече), transferring the power originally held by the princes and nobles to this council. She personally appointed Ioanna Ivanovna, a human rather than a Fae, as the first Speaker.

Pulcinella

Note: Ioanna Ivanovna is the first witch "J," referred to in some documents as "Snezhnaya's first mayor." The current Speaker of the Council and Mayor of Snezhnograd is the Fifth Fatui Harbinger, "The Rooster" Pulcinella.

Council Member

The distribution of council members' races in the PV also demonstrates the equalization of social status between humans and Fae after the Tsaritsa's reforms

Subsequently, the promulgation of the "Imperial Order Reformation Edict" marked the completion of this entire reform movement. Many Fae princes, "deeply grateful for the Tsaritsa's benevolence" after the edict was issued, voluntarily renounced their honorary noble titles retained by law, completely severed ties with the aristocracy, and departed from Snezhnaya one after another.

Note: The political reform movement launched by the Tsaritsa carries a strong sense of déjà vu. Although the name of the Snezhnograd Veche is derived from the early "Veche" citizen assembly system of the Rus' states, when combined with the story information, it actually feels more akin to a transition from the "Zemsky Sobor" and "Boyar Duma" to the "State Council" and "State Duma" system.

Within only about seven years of her ascension, the Tsaritsa reshaped the entire nation with her iron fist, sweeping the millennia-old decadent Fae aristocratic system into the trash bin of history. All of this was done to pave the way for an "even greater revolution"... After a long period of accumulation, several years before the current timeline of the story, Snezhnaya officially launched the plan to collect the Gnoses and rebel against the Heavenly Principles.
