Genshin Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah: The Wise Hroptatyr Lore Analysis

by WongLucien 17 Oct 2026

In the 7.1 Archon Quest in Snezhnaya, the Wise Hroptatyr officially appeared, and his debut immediately sparked heated discussions among players. The new version's story filled in a large amount of his background information: he is not only the head of the Universitas Magistrorum in Khaenri'ah, but also a close friend and fellow classmate of Pierro the Jester. The two used to often study legal principles and secret arts together under a tree, but in the end, they parted ways because of their conflicting ideals.

Like the other sinners of Khaenri'ah, his name also follows the established convention, drawn from the Germanic mythology system, which is mainly centered on Norse mythology.

Origin of Name "Hroptatyr"

The name "Hroptatyr" of "The Wise" Hroptatyr (Old Norse: Hroptatýr) is one of the many names of "Odin" (Odin, Old Norse: Óðinn), the king of the gods in Norse mythology (according to statistics, Odin has at least 170 different names in the various Old Norse mythological records that have been passed down to this day). Its meaning matches the title of this character, which is "Sage".

The Sage Hanging Upside Down on a Tree

In the precious souvenir item "Silver Twig" obtained after clearing the main storyline of Sumeru, there is a record: "A sage hanging upside down on a tree had acquired the knowledge of how to inscribe runes and control sacred words, and thus followed the kingdom established along the tree's roots, eventually gaining a glimpse of the secret of the cosmos." Earlier, it was always believed that the "sage" described in this sentence referred to Irmin, the one-eyed king of Khaenri'ah, but now it seems more likely to refer to this "The Wise" Hroptatyr among the Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah.

Mythological Prototype of "Hroptatyr"

If you are familiar with Norse mythology, when you see keywords such as "hanging upside down" and "runes," you should immediately think of the legend of Odin discovering the runic letters.

Odin, as the god of magic, war, and death, is also the god of wisdom who governs knowledge, and he has a strong desire to pursue knowledge. According to legend, Odin once hung himself upside down on the world tree "Yggdrasill" for nine days and nine nights. During this time, he also wounded himself with a spear. Through this ascetic practice, he finally comprehended the wisdom and mystery of the magical runic letters "Runes."

Odin hung himself on the world tree and wounded himself with a spear. Through this self-sacrifice, he obtained the powerful magical runic letters "Runes." The "Runes" that Odin sought are considered to be incantations with incredible power. Legend says that as long as they are carved on wood, stone, metal, or even any material, the user can obtain infinite power from these objects. The "Norns," who govern the "past," "present," and "future," would even carve these letters on a golden shield to record the fate of the world.

In reality, runic letters were once used by many Nordic peoples, the most famous representatives being the "Vikings." During their historical development, they gradually became a "dead language" and lost their function of daily communication, but at the same time, they developed in the direction of occult use. Ancient European hermits regarded them as tools for communicating with the gods and also used them to practice witchcraft. The function of runic letters as divination and ritual symbols has been preserved to this day. Now we can often see them in various fantasy literary works or games that involve Norse mythology settings. "Genshin Impact" has also adapted this setting.

Genshin The Wise

The so-called record "A sage hanging upside down on a tree had acquired the knowledge of how to inscribe runes and control sacred words" should indeed describe the deed of "The Wise" Hroptatyr discovering (or inventing) runes with special power. And these runes might just be the symbols we can see on Khaenri'ahn machinery, or the symbols described as being carved on chaotic components. The construct machines built by King Deshret's civilization also feature runes carved on their parts, though what is carved on them is desert script. Whether these runes are truly a processing technique that grants special power to machines, or only exist as a form of marking or decoration, is something we cannot know. In fact, the act of "hanging upside down" itself also corresponds to Chlothar's later creation of the "Defiled Statue" using Abyss power.

Genshin Hroptatyr

In the Traveler Chapter "We Will Be Reunited," the Traveler foiled the Abyss Order's plan to modify Osial's body to create a mechanical god, and the core of that plan, the "Defiled Statue," was precisely the mysterious product created by Chlothar using Abyss power. Now we also know that this plan was only a technical experiment, and its ultimate purpose was still to push forward the completion of the "Loom of Fate."

It is not hard to guess that back then, Hroptatyr presented this new technology to the king and vigorously promoted its use. This move contributed to the "energy revolution" in the field of machinery in Khaenri'ah, and also led to the rapid elimination of the traditional energy "Azosite" power system, which had condensed the painstaking efforts of generations of Khaenri'ahn scientists. According to the expression in the engineering records, "(traditional energy) has a lamentable gap compared with the newly discovered so-called 'perpetual' energy." But the true source of this "era-transcending" discovery naturally did not rely on the mysterious description of "hanging upside down." According to records, it should have relied on the "gospel from beyond the sky" (the enlightenment of the Abyss). Khaenri'ahn society ultimately sank deeper and deeper into the trap of abusing Abyss energy, planting the root of disaster for the Calamity that came later.

Genshin Impact The Wise

This glory that seemed to belong to a leap of civilization was, from the very beginning, wrapped in the deadly poison of the Abyss's gift, and the sage who personally presented this gift also step by step walked toward his own sin of defying the Heavenly Principles.
